RETICULATION DESIGN 4
ECRED4A
Semester 2 – 2025
This project will measure Graduate Attribute 5.
GA 5: Demonstrate competence to select and apply and recognise limitations of appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modelling, to broadly defined engineering problems, typically in the design of reticulation design of potable water networks, sanitary sewer systems and stormwater runoff designs.
Associated knowledge and attitude profile:
• Conceptually based mathematics, numerical analysis, data analysis, statistics and formal aspects of computer and information science to support detailed consideration and use of models applicable to the subdiscipline.
• Knowledge of engineering technologies applicable in the subdiscipline.
Project Description
Part 1 (Manual Design)
Design the three reticulation designs (potable, stormwater and sewer) for a small new residential area. (The project will be done individually.)
Part 2 (Practical part on CAD)
Select one of the designs to be modelled with the aid of a CAD program and compare the results. Describe the CAD program used and the process followed to do the design on CAD. All the necessary results and outputs should be provided. Include layouts of design done on CAD as well.
Extra information for PART 1 of the project:
• Design a plan layout of a suburb (80 – 150 houses) of any town and show contours.
• The layout should be done on an A1 or A3 page.
• Follow the design procedures explained in class for all the networks.
• Use the The Neighbourhood Planning and Design Guide (Red Book) as a guideline for the design parameters.
• State any assumptions or reasons used in your design.
• Include all references and acknowledgements.
• Show the basic design calculations and tabulate it neatly, preferably typed. The layout and placement of pipes may by drawn by hand or by CAD.
• Attach all roughwork at the back of project as evidence of own work.
• The project will contribute 40% towards the final mark.
Extra information for PART 2 of the project:
• Civil Designer modelling tool available in R107
• The practical part will contribute 20% towards the final mark, with a subminimum of 50% required to pass the module
