Case Study for Adult and LD Students

Keisha , 20 year old woman is living with Down’s Syndrome and Type 1 diabetes. She lives with her mother Olubumni who is her main carer and helps Keisha to manage her diabetes and insulin injections. They used to be very close until recently. Olubumni is experiencing peri -menopause and has been suffering from palpitations, hot flushes and brainfog. She finds it hard to manage Keisha’s care at the moment.

Keisha has recently started dating Kemal who also lives with Downs Syndrome and they like to go on dates together, especially eating out in restaurants or meeting for coffee and cake. Kemal likes to give his girlfriend presents and often buys her expensive chocolates as a surprise.

Recently, Keisha has put on some weight and is not happy about this issue. She is trying to lose weight and has stopped eating, due to this she sometimes experiences hypoglycaemia as her mother had administered the insulin as prescribed, only for Keisha to refuse to eat her meal.

One hypoglycaemic episode occurred whilst Keisha was out shopping with her mum and she fainted. She has been admitted to your ward and you are doing the admission for Keisha. Keisha is able to answer most of your questions but Olubumni is with her and tends to answer for Keisha. You sense that Keisha is getting upset by this .

Later on her mother approaches you to tell you that she is concerned about her daughter’s relationship with Kemal  and she worries about Keisha getting pregnant or contracting a STD.

How would you plan holistic and person-centered care for Keisha using the theories, tools and concepts you have covered in this module?
