Article Assignment

On our journey to learn more about Texas Government, you've read your textbook and completed other online activities. Now it's time to take what you’ve learned and explore how it impacts the world around you.

Look back over the chapter topics covered in this week's module and complete the following steps:

1.                  Look through newspapers and news sources. Read your local city paper. Read one of the big city or national newspapers. See chart below for some of the top news outlets and their leanings. Find a recent (within the last 12 months) article that pertains, in some way, to the assigned TOPIC. Try to find a unique article, that one of your classmates has not shared with the class.

2.                  Share that article with your classmates. Before posting your article, take a look at your classmates’ postings (titles) to be sure that your article has not already been shared. Articles should be unique. First come, first serve - so post your article early.

3.                  The first line of your posting should be the source citation of the article. Format your article citation as follows: author’s last name, first name. "Article Title." Newspaper Title, city, date. If found online, then also include the url or database where found.

4.                  Provide the following three items in your 250-word minimum summary.

a.       Summarize the main points of the article.

b.      Explain how your article demonstrates the TOPIC in practice.

c.       Personally react to the article. Why did it interest you? What did you learn from it?

5.                  After posting your article, take a look at what your classmates have posted. Respond and interact with ONE of your classmates' postings. Your 50-word (minimum) interaction can be a chance for you to add additional information, ask a question, or react in some personal way.

The Grading Rubric for this assignment can be found on the last page.

The article should connect to TEXAS GOVERNMENT in action.

The AllSides Media Bias Chart™ helps you to easily identify different perspectives and political leanings in the news so you can get the full picture and think for yourself.

Knowing the political bias of media outlets allows you to consume a balanced news diet and avoid manipulation, misinformation, and fake news. Everyone is biased, but hidden media bias misleads and divides us.

This chart does not rate accuracy or credibility. A publication can be accurate, yet biased. Learn why AllSides doesn't rate accuracy.  Unless otherwise noted, these bias ratings are based on online written content, not TV, radio, or broadcast content.
