A variety of social factors may contribute to violent crime. Issues of poverty, general economic inequality, and inequality based on ascribed characteristics such as race may all have an impact on the prevalence of violent crime. For example, Black people are more likely than those of other races to be imprisoned in the United States. Why is that? Social factors such as differential access to opportunities and legal representation may account for this disproportionate representation. Similarly, rural communities are considered safer in terms of violent crime rates, while large metropolitan cities typically have more violent crime due to areas of increased poverty and other social factors.
When looking at violent crime statistics, it is important that forensic psychology professionals keep the social factors that contribute to violent crime at top of mind. For this Discussion, you will analyze the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data to determine what social and cultural factors may help explain the prevalence of violent crime in different areas.
