This paper is based on an Experiential Learning Activity. After performing one of the activities listed below (or designing one of their own), students will write at least two pages of critical response, summarizing not only what occurred during the activity, but also what they learned as a result.
Specifically, student should consider: 1. How does this experience compare with the dominant culture point of view? 2. What does this experience teach me about this group? 3. What does it teach me about public health? 4. What does it teach me about myself? 5. What public health programs could help remedy issues raised by this activity? List of activities (choose one or ask me about an idea you have): Go to a local spot for one hour such as a park, mall, etc. and: • Observe smoking behavior o Tally how many smokers and nonsmokers you observe o Estimate age of each individual and sex (m/f) • Observe stair vs. escalator use o Tally how many individuals use the stairs and how many used the escalator (it would be helpful if these two options were side by side) o Estimate age of each individual and sex (m/f) • Observe littering vs. using appropriate trash/recycling containers o Tally how many individuals litter and how many used appropriate trash/recycling containers o Estimate age of each individual and sex (m/f) • Observe mask use vs. no mask (choose a place with a mask mandate to enter) o Tally how many individuals are wearing a mask upon entry and how many are not, as well as how many leave with a mask on vs. how many leave without a mask on o Estimate age of each individual and sex (m/f)
